If you owe more tax than you can pay

  • File your return on time even if you cannot pay; the failure-to-file penalty is generally much larger than the failure-to-pay penalty.
  • The IRS offers short-term payment plans and longer-term installment agreements; many can be set up online at irs.gov.
  • Penalties and interest generally continue to accrue on unpaid balances until they are paid in full.
  • The Taxpayer Advocate Service, an independent organization within the IRS, can help if a tax problem is causing financial hardship.
  • Be wary of companies that promise to settle tax debt for “pennies on the dollar”; check IRS guidance on offers in compromise first.
